Navigating Dubai’s roads requires awareness of the Salik toll system, which helps manage traffic flow and reduce congestion. Understanding the common Salik fines and how to avoid them can save you from unexpected expenses and ensure a hassle-free driving experience.
Insufficient Funds (ISF) Violation – AED 50
If your Salik account lacks sufficient balance when passing through a toll gate, and you fail to recharge it within five working days, you’ll incur a Dh50 fine. This penalty applies once per day per vehicle. Salik will notify you via SMS if your account has insufficient funds, provided your contact details are up to date.
Unregistered Plate (URP) Violation – Up to AED 400
If your vehicle isn’t registered with Salik and you drive through a toll gate, you must register and activate a Salik tag within 10 working days from your first trip. Failure to do so results in fines escalating from Dh100 for the first offence to Dh400 for each subsequent offence. This penalty applies once per day per vehicle.
Tampering or Damage – AED 10,000
Serious violations, such as tampering with a Salik tag through fraud or manipulation, or causing damage to Salik toll gates, self-service recharge machines, or other Salik-owned assets, can lead to a Dh10,000 fine. These offences may also result in further legal consequences.
Maintain Sufficient Balance: Regularly check and top up your Salik account to ensure you have enough funds before passing through toll gates.
Register Your Vehicle Promptly: If you’re new to Salik, register your vehicle and activate a Salik tag within 10 working days of your first trip.
Handle Tags Properly: Avoid tampering with or damaging Salik tags to prevent hefty fines and potential legal issues.
Update Contact Information: Ensure your mobile number and other contact details are current to receive timely notifications about your Salik account status.
If you believe a violation was issued in error, you can file a dispute within 13 months from the date it was added to your traffic file. Ensure your contact details are up to date to receive notifications about any disputes.
Salik accounts that remain inactive for five years—meaning no tolls, payments, or balance top-ups—will be deactivated, and the remaining balance will be forfeited. To keep your account active, make occasional top-ups or use a toll gate.
