A sulphuric acid leak at a factory in Aqaba, Jordan has left at least 43 people injured, local authorities confirmed on October 14, 2025. According to the Public Security Directorate (PSD), the leak originated from a chemical storage site and caused a toxic cloud to spread over approximately 400 square meters.
Emergency response teams from the Aqaba Civil Defence Directorate were dispatched immediately after the incident was reported. The PSD stated that multiple individuals experienced breathing difficulties and were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment. Two of the victims are in intensive care. Authorities said the factory had initiated containment protocols even before the arrival of hazardous materials units, who then carried out technical measures to neutralize the leak.
The PSD affirmed that measurements taken at the scene by hazardous materials teams show air quality levels have now returned within safe limits. An official investigation has been launched in coordination with relevant safety and environmental agencies to determine the cause of the leak.
