US President Donald Trump has announced that Hamas is ‘ready for peace’ in Gaza, following signals from the group indicating willingness to accept core elements of Trump’s landmark plan, including a ceasefire, Israeli withdrawal, hostages and prisoner exchange, and a surge of humanitarian aid. However, key differences remain regarding Gaza’s future governance and the role of Hamas in the territory, with further talks proposed.
Hostage exchange: Hamas is prepared to release Israeli hostages, both living and deceased, as per the “exchange formula” in Trump’s proposal, contingent on mediated negotiations.
Ceasefire and Israeli withdrawal: The group agrees to halt hostilities and supports removing Israeli forces from Gaza—rejecting occupation but seeking clarity on withdrawal stages.
Humanitarian aid and opposition to displacement: Hamas welcomes international aid and opposes forced displacement, with Trump’s plan detailing aid to be distributed by UN, Red Crescent, and infrastructure rehabilitation.
Gaza governance: Trump proposes a temporary technocratic committee with international oversight (including Tony Blair), while Hamas prefers an independent Palestinian body with Arab and Islamic support.
Hamas’ role: The US plan requires Hamas to disarm and relinquish any governance role, while Hamas insists on remaining part of a “national Palestinian framework.”
Trump’s 20-point Gaza peace plan additionally offers amnesty and safe passage for disarming Hamas members, pledges an immediate end to bombardment, comprehensive prisoner exchange, massive aid and reconstruction for Gazans, and the deployment of an International Stabilisation Force led by the US, Arab states, and partners.
For Hamas: Disarmament, withdrawal from governance, and integration into national dialogue.
For Israelis: Swift release of hostages and the promise of a demilitarized enclave monitored by international forces.
For Palestinians: An end to violence, infrastructural recovery, freedom to remain or leave, and a path toward self-determination, though unresolved political issues persist.
The plan is endorsed by Israel and many global leaders; Hamas’s formal response is expected soon. Final agreement hinges on resolving debates over governance and Hamas’s future in Gaza.
