UAE graduates skills vs degrees

UAE graduates skills vs degrees is now a priority for employability, according to specialists at Gulf News Edufair Dubai 2025. Experts emphasized that in today’s rapidly evolving workplace, having practical and transferable skills is just as important—if not more—than simply holding a degree.

During the panel ‘Skills over Syllabi: Why Outcomes Outweigh Course Titles,’ Prof Shashank Khurana from BITS Pilani Dubai pointed out that technical knowledge alone does not guarantee workplace success. Adaptability, soft skills, and the ability to apply learning in real-world contexts are critical. “A graduate who can adapt, learn, unlearn, and relearn will survive,” he said.

Dr Vidya Nandagopal of University of Dubai reinforced that AI cannot replicate human meta-skills. She named communication, collaboration, problem-solving, critical thinking, data literacy, and resilience as key skills that keep graduates relevant even as technology advances.

Ruchi Aggarwal of De Montfort University warned that market demands now change faster than academic curricula. “Success no longer comes from degrees alone; students must acquire and demonstrate new skills to compete,” she said.

In vocational fields, Jeff Strachan of Dubai College of Tourism insisted that practical skills are non-negotiable. Real-world immersion—combining technical skills with empathy, manners, and grooming standards—creates truly employable graduates.

Edufair Dubai 2025, running through Sunday at the H Dubai Hotel, features panel discussions and guidance from over 35 higher education institutions, helping students and graduates understand the competitive advantage of skills alongside formal qualifications.
