The United Arab Emirates has launched a sweeping campaign to combat digital narcotics networks by detecting and blocking 2,297 websites and social-media accounts that were promoting narcotics and psychotropic substances. The announcement was made by Sheikh Zayed bin Hamad Al Nahyan, Chairman of the National Anti‑Narcotics Authority (NANA), during the UAE Government Annual Meetings 2025.
Sheikh Zayed emphasised that the establishment of NANA underscores the UAE’s determination to unify efforts across society and government in confronting drug-abuse threats. As part of the strategy, the authority will soon launch a confidential hotline where informants can report drug-related crimes, with financial rewards for information that leads to arrests or the prevention of smuggling operations.
In addition to the digital crackdown, the campaign includes several new initiatives aimed at strengthening prevention and awareness. A new subject titled “Safety and Security” will be introduced in high-school curricula to educate students about the risks of substance abuse and other unsafe behaviours. The “National Activities Program” will promote engagement in sports, culture and recreation across neighbourhoods, community centres and public parks, offering youth alternatives that reduce vulnerability to drug-related risks.
Sheikh Zayed further noted that the UAE’s international cooperation has expanded: the country now works in partnership with 24 nations to intercept large-scale drug shipments abroad. The blocking of 2,297 online platforms is a key part of the broader digital-surveillance drive to monitor and dismantle modern methods of drug promotion across the internet.
Authorities remind the public that vigilance and cooperation are essential. While this campaign targets the online front of the narcotics trade, success will depend on community engagement, reporting suspicious activity and supporting preventive measures across all levels of society.
