Abu Dhabi solar power after sunset will become reality with the launch of the world’s first gigascale round-the-clock renewable energy project, now under construction and targeting operations in 2027. The Dh22-billion facility—developed by Masdar and Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC)—will combine a 5.2 GW solar PV array with a massive 19 gigawatt-hour battery energy storage system, the largest and most advanced globally.
Leveraging cutting-edge AI for forecasting, intelligent dispatch, and predictive analytics, the project will deliver one gigawatt of clean, continuous baseload electricity day and night—enough to power hundreds of thousands of homes and key industries like AI and data centers. The initiative will create more than 10,000 jobs, establish new manufacturing hubs across the UAE, and avoid roughly 5.7 million tonnes of annual carbon emissions, equivalent to taking a million cars off roads.
Masdar, already active in 40 countries and targeting 100 GW of clean energy by 2030, calls it their largest and most ambitious effort. The facility sets a new benchmark for global renewable projects by overcoming solar and wind intermittency at a price competitive with fossil fuels. Once operational, it’s expected to serve as a blueprint worldwide, helping countries transition power grids to sustainable, reliable, 24/7 clean energy.
