A disturbing case of alleged murder by a medical professional has shocked India and drawn scrutiny from across the region. In Bengaluru, Dr Mahendra Reddy — a surgical resident at the government-run Victoria Hospital — stands accused of killing his wife, Dr Kruthika Reddy, a dermatologist, by administering a fatal dose of anaesthetic in their home this past April.

Investigators say the victim collapsed, was rushed to hospital by her husband and was declared dead soon after. Initially listed as respiratory arrest, a later toxicology report revealed the presence of anaesthesia-related substances, triggering a full murder investigation. Surprisingly, while reviewing the doctor’s digital communications, police uncovered a text message sent to another woman: “I killed my wife for you”. Further interrogations revealed the doctor had been in contact with four to five women, allegedly stating he had committed the crime to be with one of them.

Authorities emphasise that there was no medical justification for administering such drugs at home. The doctor, now in judicial custody, is being charged with murder, destruction of evidence and misuse of professional access to controlled substances. Investigators are reviewing CCTV footage, hospital drug logs and mobile messages to piece together the timeline and motive.

The case raises sobering questions about the accountability and oversight of medical professionals, the safe handling of anaesthetic drugs, and how misuse can go undetected until tragedy strikes. For families and communities in the UAE-based Indian diaspora, it’s a reminder of the risks hidden behind prestigious professions and the need for vigilance — even in trusted settings.

As the legal process unfolds, public and media attention will focus on how the medical system safeguards patients and whether the regulatory framework is robust enough to prevent such cases in future.
