Bitcoin mining—a process validating transactions through energy-intensive computations—is now understood to consume more energy per dollar generated than mining copper or gold. A 2025 UN University report estimates around $0.35 of environmental damage per dollar of Bitcoin created, surpassing most metals or industrial products.
Most mining electricity derives from fossil fuels, releasing greenhouse gases and fine particulate pollution (PM2.5) linked to respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. Harvard researchers highlight that pollution from power plants feeding large-scale mining operations affects populations far from mining sites, imposing widespread health costs.
Additional damage comes from tens of thousands of tonnes of electronic waste annually caused by short-lived mining rigs filled with toxic metals contaminating soil and groundwater. Large water demands for cooling mining equipment compete with agriculture, especially in water-scarce regions.
In the UAE, authorities banned crypto mining on farmlands following illegal operations using subsidized electricity, citing risks to soil quality, fire hazards, and food-security.
While some advocate greener mining techniques—such as heat reuse, integration with renewable energy, and Proof-of-Stake blockchain protocols—Bitcoin still relies on energy-heavy Proof-of-Work mining without immediate signs of transition.
The crypto industry’s environmental footprint demands urgent attention and policies to balance digital innovation with ecological and public health imperatives.
