Dh750 million Emirates Road upgrade has officially commenced, marking a key milestone in the UAE’s strategy to modernize its federal road network and ease traffic congestion on one of the nation’s busiest highways. The two-year project, spearheaded by the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, will widen Emirates Road from three to five lanes in each direction over a 25-kilometre stretch from Al Badea Interchange in Sharjah to the Umm Al Quwain border.
This expansion will boost the road’s capacity by 65 percent, allowing up to 9,000 vehicles per hour to travel smoothly. Significant redevelopment of Interchange 7 includes the construction of six directional bridges spanning 12.6 kilometres, designed to handle 13,200 vehicles per hour. Additionally, 3.4 kilometres of service roads will be added along both sides of the highway for better traffic management.
Once complete, the upgrade is expected to cut travel times by up to 45 percent for motorists commuting between Ras Al Khaimah, Umm Al Quwain, Sharjah, and Dubai. Beyond easing congestion, the project aims to reduce vehicle emissions caused by traffic jams and enhance the flow of trade and logistics across the northern Emirates.
The Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure emphasized that this project represents a sustainable solution to traffic challenges while supporting the UAE’s economic growth and population increase. Officials highlight the upgrade’s role in creating a smarter and more resilient transport network aligned with the country’s vision for an integrated road system by 2031.
Carefully phased construction plans will minimize disruption, and the public is encouraged to follow official channels for updates and traffic guidance during the project duration.
