Dubai airship swing stunt — the jaw-dropping spectacle that captured global attention after being shared by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed, Crown Prince of Dubai — was far more than an aerial showpiece. Behind the viral video of Belgian daredevil Magali Folkner Braff swinging gracefully under a powered airship at 1,000 feet above Dubai was a story of innovative engineering, creative vision, and teamwork on a global scale.
The six-hour performance, filmed across Dubai’s world-famous skyline, has drawn millions of views online. For Skydive Dubai, it marked the company’s 15-year anniversary and the launch of the 31st Dubai Shopping Festival (DSF) — both celebrated through this once-in-history aerial achievement.
A Dream Takes Flight
According to a Skydive Dubai spokesperson, the concept had lived on their creative wishlist for years. “It began when we first acquired our airship and started realizing its creative potential,” they said. Unlike traditional balloon stunts performed in remote areas, this vision aimed to blend the elegance of flight with fashion — a lady in red soaring over an urban skyline at sunrise.
“Bringing that dream to life over the landmarks of Dubai truly completed the vision,” the spokesperson added. The red dress, echoing the color of the DSF shopping bag, symbolized both courage and the spirit of the festival.
Engineering the Impossible
Two major challenges stood in the way: designing a swing that was both safe and camera-perfect, and creating a dress built to fly under real-world conditions.
The swing had to let the athlete move freely while preventing twisting or rotation, and include a quick-release mechanism for emergencies. Engineers also built in structural reinforcements to hold Magali securely for the six-hour flight.
As for the dress — it was a masterpiece in itself. Four identical variants were crafted, each tested for aerodynamics and durability. The asymmetrical sleeves, reinforced arm straps, and double lining were not just for style but for safety, balance, and parachute concealment during the descent.
Four Weeks to Make History
Once greenlit, Skydive Dubai executed the entire project within four weeks, powered by a 25-member core team and the coordinated support of multiple UAE government entities including Dubai Municipality, Jumeirah, and the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism (DET).
“It was a shared dream made possible through precision, safety, and collaboration,” said the spokesperson. “Every move was tested, every role rehearsed — because there was no room for error at 1,000 feet above the city.”
The Spirit of the Sky
Asked what message the act intended to convey, the spokesperson shared: “This stunt is a reminder that if you respect your craft, trust your team, and prepare with discipline, you can achieve what once seemed out of reach.”
That message echoes Sheikh Hamdan’s caption when he shared the video on social media: “Dare to dream… and then swing higher.”
A True Global First
The Dubai airship swing stunt represents a world-first — a swing performed from a powered airship over a major metropolitan skyline. Only a handful of pilots globally possess the skill to maneuver such an aircraft with precision while a performer swings 25 meters below.
During the six-hour journey, Magali Braff flew over Palm Jumeirah, Burj Khalifa, Burj Al Arab, Dubai Canal, and Kite Beach, covering more than 14 kilometers before performing a flawless landing.
According to Dubai Festivals and Retail Establishment (DFRE), organizers of the Dubai Shopping Festival, “This collaboration with Skydive Dubai showcases DSF’s role as a platform for extraordinary creativity that elevates Dubai’s global identity. The sky is not the limit — it’s the stage.”
A Vision in Motion
Today, the video continues to inspire millions worldwide — not just for its beauty, but for what it represents: Dubai’s endless confidence in turning imagination into reality. Skydive Dubai’s unmatched expertise and technical skill have once again placed the city high above global expectations — literally and figuratively.
