Pakistan has announced the arrest of four militants linked to a suicide bombing outside a district court in Islamabad that killed at least 12 people and wounded dozens. Authorities say the detained individuals belong to a cell connected to the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and were guided by leaders based in Afghanistan.
The arrests came following a joint operation carried out by the country’s Intelligence Bureau and Counter-Terrorism Department. Officials said the four suspects included a commander and operatives who played key roles in planning and executing the attack. The network, according to the government, was “handled and guided at every step by the high command based in Afghanistan.”
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi confirmed that the suicide bomber, identified as Usman alias Qari, was a resident of Nangarhar province in Afghanistan. Investigators said one of the arrested men, Sajid Ullah, acted as a handler, coordinating logistics and managing the movement of the explosive vest from a graveyard in Pakistan’s northwest to Islamabad.
Authorities believe the attack was orchestrated under the direction of a TTP commander known as Saeed-ur-Rehman (Daadullah), currently based in Afghanistan. The suspect reportedly sent images of the bomber to Ullah via an encrypted messaging app, and directed the flow of materials and personnel across the border.
The Islamabad bombing targeted the judicial complex in the G-11 sector, an area housing courthouses and legal offices. The blast occurred during peak hours, generating panic, widespread damage, and raising serious concerns about militant networks operating from across the Afghan border.
According to investigators, more arrests are expected as the probe continues. The detainees are being questioned to uncover the full extent of their network, possible co-conspirators, and the chain of command behind the attack.
The bombing has escalated already intense cross-border tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan. Islamabad has blamed Afghan-based militant leaders for orchestrating the strike, while critics warn that militant sanctuaries in Afghanistan pose a growing national security threat to Pakistan.
