A JetBlue altitude drop on a flight from Cancún, Mexico, to Newark, New Jersey, caused a mid-air emergency on Friday, forcing the aircraft to divert to Tampa, Florida. The incident left multiple passengers injured and prompted a federal investigation.

Incident Overview

The Airbus A320, operated by JetBlue, experienced a sudden loss of altitude approximately one hour into the flight. Tracking data showed the aircraft plummeted nearly 14,500 feet in five minutes, followed by another 12,000-foot descent shortly after.
The plane landed safely at Tampa International Airport around 2:20 p.m. local time, where emergency responders were waiting.

Injuries and Response

Authorities confirmed that between 15 and 20 passengers sustained injuries, mostly minor. Several were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment, including one with a head laceration.
JetBlue immediately grounded the aircraft for inspection and said in a statement that passenger safety remains its top priority.

Investigation Launched

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and JetBlue have opened an investigation into the cause of the JetBlue altitude drop. Early reports suggest a possible “flight-control issue” that caused the aircraft to respond unexpectedly to pilot inputs.
Experts note that such anomalies, though rare, can occur due to mechanical faults or software irregularities.

Safety Review Underway

Aviation analysts have called for a detailed safety review following this JetBlue altitude drop. The aircraft remains grounded for technical checks, and passengers were accommodated on alternative flights.
