Dubai is advancing plans to provide an integrated travel experience by enabling travellers to drop off their bags at train stations before arriving at the airport. The proposal comes as the Dubai Airports (DA) chief executive, Paul Griffiths, reveals plans for significantly enhanced infrastructure for the emirate’s next‑generation aviation hub.

Griffiths told aviation media that passengers en route to the new airport at Al Maktoum International Airport would be able to check their luggage at stations of the future Etihad Rail network. The idea stems from the fact that Al Maktoum currently lacks a direct metro link, with the nearest station located several kilometres away.

The Etihad Rail line is expected to feature a high‑speed passenger route connecting Dubai and Abu Dhabi, with planned stations including Reem Island, Saadiyat Island, Yas Island, Zayed International Airport, the terminal near Al Maktoum and Al Jaddaf.

As part of the airport’s expansion announced in April 2024, a new terminal with 400 gates and five runways will boost capacity from 100 million to 260 million passengers annually. The move is driven by Dubai International Airport’s (DXB) current capacity constraints, with passenger numbers projected at 99 million next year and 115 million by 2031.

To support this surge, the airport will be designed as a “frictionless” travel zone, built on biometric technology that allows passengers to simply walk through discreet security checkpoints and streamline their movement. The eight‑terminal concept will bring what Griffiths calls “intimacy at scale.”
