UAE establishes National Media Authority, marking a major step toward strengthening and unifying the country’s media ecosystem. The Federal Decree-Law announced the creation of the National Media Authority (NMA) — a federal public body affiliated with the UAE Cabinet — to oversee, regulate, and advance all forms of media operations nationwide, including digital and free-zone media.
The new Authority will replace the Emirates Media Council, the National Media Office, and the Emirates News Agency (WAM), consolidating their mandates under one unified national framework. With full legal personality and administrative and financial independence, the NMA is tasked with shaping the country’s overall media direction and aligning it with the UAE’s national objectives and international stature.
Building a unified media vision
The National Media Authority will be responsible for developing and proposing the UAE’s strategic media directions, guiding communications, and working closely with major media outlets to unify policies and messaging. The central goal is to enhance the UAE’s reputation regionally and internationally, while also monitoring narratives and addressing potential media crises in real-time through proactive coordination.
Expanding media regulation and standards
The Authority’s responsibilities will include formulating media legislation to regulate licensing and activities across traditional, digital, and free-zone media sectors. It will also establish and enforce content standards to ensure alignment with professional and ethical principles.
Among its key functions are the registration and accreditation of media professionals and foreign correspondents, as well as overseeing journalistic operations and adherence to the highest standards of integrity.
Strengthening WAM’s role
The newly created Authority will develop the Emirates News Agency (WAM) into a stronger, more integrated outlet serving as the official voice of the UAE for local and international communication. This includes improving WAM’s role in publishing, transferring, and translating official news and coordinating news distribution across all broadcasting channels.
Additionally, the NMA will supply media institutions with verified local and international news, reports, and multimedia resources, ensuring global best practices in journalism while promoting transparency, accuracy, and innovation in the UAE’s media environment.
A future-focused media hub
By streamlining governance and consolidating efforts across platforms, the National Media Authority aims to position the UAE as a regional media leader, fostering excellence, independence, and higher professional standards.
